Illustrated Leporello
Workshop

Collaboration with Olga Epikhina
einBuch.kollektiv, Berlin
2025, 2026

Participants are guided through making a hardcover leporello — an accordion-fold artist book, illustrated with carbon paper. They learn to work with the technique, think about storytelling and page montage, fold pages, bind them into a hardcover, and finish with a textile collage cover made from bookbinding cloth and fabric.

The book is the message –
On experimental bookbinding
and artist books

Workshop week
Merz Akademie, Hochschule für Gestaltung, Kunst und Medien, Stuttgart
2024

The first part of the week some technical aspects with practical exercises and experiments with book binding and foldings were covered, to see what shapes a book can take.

After that, each student conzeptualized their own idea for a unique artist book – where format, paper and content merged into a new form. Appoximately two days were used for content creation and book making, the last day the group presented the final works for the rest of the students in the format of a small exhibition.

A project about waiting, produced and published in collaboration with textur.

Not only waiting, but also boredom, flow, and distraction were some of the key words for us during this project. We thought about waiting as a physical space — like an airport or elevator — a non-place, possibly enclosed by windows or mirrors, those hazy boundaries.

Essentially it serves as a guide for anyone who wants to learn more about book binding or starting a book project. Thom Zynwala – Works on paper
Book published by Windsor Printmaker Forum
Edition of 100
14x19 cm
2025

The catalogue accompanies Thom Zynwala’s show at the Artspeak Gallery in Windsor, that was curated by David Rimanelli.

The bold, edgy, almost rough-cut typeface called Valve, is paired with a black cover contrasted by pastel tones and red. This visual language reflects the depth and darkness of the works while also revealing playfulness, humor, and moments of intimacy. The pink book jacket contains the index of the 70 reproduced artworks and unfolds like a map.
